We are pleased to announce that Jason Thompson’s solo exhibition MORE ON MORE will be held at KOUSAGISHA GALLERY in Kyoto. Based in Liverpool, UK, Thompson will present approximately 20 new works, including smaller paintings, along with a selection of works first shown in Tokyo in April 2025.

Thompson’s paintings emerge from a distinctive process grounded in the act of painting itself, rather than from any predetermined plan or concept. He works on multiple artworks in parallel, intuitively layering paint and marks over time. Images gradually accumulate through repeated gestures, allowing each work to evolve through a balance of improvisation and reflection. Through this process, complex and delicate structures take shape. Within them, he observes a sense of visual order, including repeated motifs and compositions that incorporate both symmetry and asymmetry, which continue to unfold across the surface.

These artworks are created on supports assembled from cards and fragments of wood. On these surfaces, layers of color and form are built up, giving each painting a material presence that possesses sculptural qualities. Each work condenses time, gesture, and intuition, inviting an intimate gaze.

He describes his paintings as having “a quality that is somewhere between a sacred icon and an old shed door.” His work evokes a sense of reverence along with familiarity and memory, qualities that dwell in objects shaped by use and time. Through accumulated traces of thought and touch, his paintings engage the viewer with a steady and grounded presence.
