ギャラリー新形態での初の展覧会を開催いたします。
会場は東京・渋谷の(PLACE) by method です。

12月9日（土）から17日（日）まで、イギリスのリバプールを拠点に活動するビジュアルアーティスト、Penny Davenport（ペニー・ダベンポート）の個展「The Passing of Time」を開催いたします。日本での個展は、今回が初となります。本展では、新作のペインティングの発表とともに、新刊作品集『NAKED MILKY WAY』（torch press刊）のローンチも行います。ダベンポート本人も来日いたしますので、この貴重な機会にぜひお越しください。

ペニー・ダベンポートは、擬人化した動物や白昼夢のような風景を描くことで、身体が経験する心理的なニュアンスや人間関係の複雑さを探求しています。彼女の作品に登場する柔らかく垂れた耳や丸い鼻を持つ毛に覆われた生き物たちは、明らかに非人間的ですが、人間の特徴も備えています。二本足で立ち、しばしば手を取り合って集まり、共感と理解の感情を示唆するような目でこちらを見つめています。そして、生き物たちの仕草や表情を繊細に描くことで、見る者に主体性の投影と自己の不可思議な認識を促します。
彼女は、特定の教育を必要とする子どもたちの学校で長年働いてきたこともあり、人間のコミュニケーションの中にある暗黙のもの、間接的なものへの理解を深めてきました。それらの表現を探り続けた作品は、時に不思議な感覚を呼び起こしつつ、共感への合図となるボディランゲージの表現で満たされています。また、無邪気さや穏やかさが感じられる生き物たちの姿には、不安や寂しさ、居心地の悪さといった感覚も吹き込まれており、一見して受け取れる「かわいらしさ」の印象を時として一変させます。豊かな人間の心の機微が詰まった彼女の作品は、子供時代の半ば記憶されたイメージや不完全な物語の一コマ一コマのようでもあり、人間の心の奥に秘している何かについて語りかけてきます。

Nidi Gallery is pleased to announce “The Passing of Time”, a solo exhibition by Penny Davenport from 9th to 17th December. This will be her first solo exhibition in Japan. The exhibition will present new paintings and the launch of her new publication “NAKED MILKY WAY” by Torch Press.

Penny Davenport is a visual artist based in Liverpool (UK) whose depictions of anthropomorphic animal characters and daydreamed landscapes explores the psychological nuances of bodily experience and the complexities of inter-personal relationships. With soft drooping ears and round padded snouts, these fur-covered creatures that appear in her works are distinctly non-human, yet they also possess human characteristics: they stand on two feet, they often cluster together holding hands, and they gaze out at the viewer with eyes that suggest feelings of empathy and understanding. They also encourage a projection of conscious agency and an uncanny recognition of selfhood in their display of gestures and facial expressions, indicative of an inner life like our own.
Having worked for many years in specialized schools for children with specific educational needs, the artist has gained a particular understanding of the large extent to which human communication is implicit or indirect. The works that continue to explore these expressions are filled with displays of body language that often conjure enigmatic feeling but co-existent emotional cues. In many of Davenport’s images which appears innocence and placidity, the artist also infuses a potent sense of repression, loneliness or discomfort into her work. In a way that subverts the impression of “cuteness” that is often readable at first glance. Filled with the subtleties of the human mind, her works appearing like half-remembered images from childhood, or individual frames from an incomplete narrative, Penny Davenport’s works speak to the secret lives of human minds, in all their turmoil, elation and distinctive vulnerability.
